Algodonales is surrounded by mountains teaming with griffon vultures, a rare and majestic bird with a two-metre wingspan
that roosts on steep mountain sides. Mt Lijar, the mountain that towers above Algodonales, is one of the breeding sites of
these huge graceful flyers. They become active when the morning sun has warmed them, taking to the air to circle effortlessly
to gain height on the slightest thermal. Paraglider pilots follow their lead.
Within view of Algo is the perfect hill town (pueblo blanco) of Zahara. It sits on a lake (above) which you can swim
in. The lake is fed from water in the mountains, and there are numerous spots around its edge for picnic-ers.
The surrounding mountains and countryside in this area offer great conditions for paragliding and hang gliding. The sports
are embraced by the local council because they are good for the local economy, and some farmers are paid by the council to
provide safe landing places for gliders of both kinds.
There are a number of flying schools in Algodonales, which offer tuition in a variety of languages.
For painters, photographers and those moved by the sheer beauty of mountains, the countryside will provide endless inspiration.
It is an unbelievably photogenic area. Even a drive to the next village will give artists and photographers cause to stop
several times.
